Turn Your Passion For Shopping Into a Career

by WorkFromHomeJobs on August 20, 2011

If you’re looking for an opportunity to start a home based business and you can’t figure out what skills you possess that would lend themselves to such a business, consider your ability to shop. While everyone can and does shop on a regular basis, some of us are better than others at picking out the perfect outfit at a clothing retailer, or finding the best deals at the supermarket. You can turn your passion for shopping into a work from home business.

Be sure that you truly have the skills to be a personal shopper

While you may feel that you love shopping, a love for shopping isn’t enough to become a personal shopper. Instead, you need to have specific skills that other people do not personally possess, or else there’s nothing for you to market. Some skills that lend themselves to becoming a personal shopper include:

  • Having an eye for fashion, which means you can help a client pick out the right outfit for their figure and age for a specific special occasion.
  • Knowing how to spot sales and discounts, which means you can help clients save money on their purchases. This typically is only helpful if you’re able to save clients more money than your services cost them, but, if you are very good at finding deals, this could easily be the case.

Get to know your clients well

If you want to shop for a client based on their personality, needs, and wants, you’re going to need to know a lot about them. You may want to start with a basic list of questions related to personality and taste, so that you’ll begin to get an idea of what kinds of items your client would enjoy. This could even be done through a website for your home based personal shopping business, so you don’t necessarily need to leave your home and meet with your client to find out what they like.

Start by marketing your services to people who know you

People who already know you are probably going to know that you’re a savvy shopper, so start off by marketing your skills to them. You may have to do some free work for friends and family to get the ball rolling, but word of mouth advertising should have the paying clients rolling in soon enough.

Stay organised and in touch

Once you have clients, the key to keeping them is by keeping their requests organised and by keeping in touch with your clients about new trends, sales, or anything that might appeal to them. Being a personal shopper is not a passive career; instead, you’ll have several clients that you must keep in mind simultaneously, and you need to keep them informed about your intentions to purchase items for them.

Turning your passion for shopping can be a lucrative home based career. Build your client base by beginning with people you know, and remember to really get to know all of your clients so you know what they would really like you to buy on your shopping trips for them.
